Ordered Chaos

‘orb and cup’ project By Thomas Jenkins and Alex Hellum for Norwegian Protoypes 2010

The ‘ orb and cup’ food and drink unit was conceived as a result of working together on a joint project for this years Norwegian Prototypes exhibition.

The concept was to design half the project each knowing only the practical nature of the others design and not what the aesthetic approach was.

This was borne out of the idea that most homes lives in a constantly fluctuating environment where objects are being replaced and bought as on when they break, are worn out, or just replaced by newer and better things.

The overall aesthetic then becomes a kind of ordered chaos where things only belong together through function.

They also chose to base the design upon the notion that they are both representing different country’s bringing them together in an object.
The cup by Thomas is based upon the idea of the traditional Norwegian wooden cup, and the orb by Alex is a container for transporting a piece of fruit, a snack, a tea bag etc.

They are then brought together by the use of an elastic band.

The material is wood to keep the naturalness but finished differently to emphasize the different shapes and functions.
